Protecting Plants in a Freeze

It’s getting colder outside at night.  You may have planted over the past couple of months like I did.  If you have, be aware that new plantings need to be protected.  Depending on the hardiness of your plant, you will need to take protective measures to save it.  Since we live in the South, most of the time we don’t have to go to extreme measures.  I usually cover mine with a towel or sheet.  You can always add a plastic cover, but remember not to place directly on plant as it will cause damage.  The plastic should be placed over the towel or sheet.  Remember to remove the coverings first thing in the morning.  If you are reading this blog in a colder climate, you will need to take more precautions, like heavy mulching, using hay, warm bottles, Christmas lights, etc.  All your plants need watering, but remember to water soil, not leaves.  This will help the plant retain heat.
